To prevent weed growth you need to add spanking new mulch three inches deep.  Go ahead and clear other areas you would like to cover with the pine bark mulch. These areas could be around trees’ roots, flowers and so on.  If you are applying the mulch during the cold seasons, make sure the roots of the plants are protected from drying once they freeze.
